Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) and Physiotherapy
Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) whilst not a very common condition in the Sutherland Shire, it is a condition that can have a dramatic and significant impact on an individual’s life and it is a condition in which a multidisciplinary approach to care can play a significant role in assisting the rehabilitation process back to recovery. GBS is an inflammatory polyradiculoneuropathy associated with numerous viral infections. Coronavirus (COVID-19) has been shown to be associated with a lot of neurological complications, of which GBS is an important post-infectious consequentiality.
The symptoms of GBS can be varied from individual-to-individual, however they usually commence in the extremities and work the way to your trunk. Some people can lose the majority of their movements and others are only partially affected. Fortunately, about 80% of individuals can walk independently six months after diagnosis. About 60% fully recover motor strength one year after diagnosis and only 5% to 10% have very delayed and incomplete recovery.
At Aevum Health we have a large multidisciplinary team with state-of-the-art equipment to help our patients recover from GBS and get back to what they love doing the most. We can help you formulate a recovery plan and see it through as well as navigate the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) to help gain the support needed to get back to your best.
