What is Physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy or “physio” for short is one of the world’s oldest medical professions, with Hippocrates and Galen beginning physical therapy treatments in Ancient Greece in 460 BC.

Physiotherapy is the action of restoring one’s health through physical rehabilitation. If you have sustained an acute injury or you’re having persistent pain in your muscles and joints, physiotherapy may be able to help. If you have an underlying health condition that affects your muscles - like cerebral palsy (CP) or multiple sclerosis (MS) - physiotherapy can assist you to achieve your goals under the national disability insurance scheme (NDIS).

After formulating a clear diagnosis a physiotherapist will employ different methods to work with your body, including stretching tissue, strengthening muscles and manipulating joints to move through their complete range of motion.

Types of Physio Treatment

Physiotherapists operate in many different fields, treating a wide variety of patients, here are some of the medical applications of physiotherapy.

  • Musculo-skeletal Physio: Physiotherapists who work in orthopaedics are all about movement. These physio’s work with patients who deal with injuries to muscle and joint issues that cause physical pain.

  • Neuro Physio: Experienced Physios dealing with patients who have neurological conditions that limit physical function. Their goal is to introduce physical function into the body slowly, to allow the brain to recognize that functionality and adapt its pathways to allow physical movement to become a part of the bodily function of the patient. Some common conditions they work with include stroke and acquired brain injury.

  • Paediatric Physio: Physiotherapists whom work with children. Sometimes they are brought in to aid in a child’s movement if a child is premature, for example or has any delayed developmental milestones. Also Paediatric Physiotherapists have an approach more suited to the care of a child after injury.

  • Sports Physio: Sports physiotherapists deal specifically with various types of sports injuries to help athletes maintain their physical fitness and are particularly familiar with the kinds of injuries that result from the physical activity associated with playing a professional sport.

  • Cardio-respiratory Physio: Physiotherapists use physical treatments to treat patients who struggle with heart disease or breathing problems - the goal of the physical therapy is to engage the heart and lungs in slightly strenuous activity to increase function and capacity.

The Benefits of Physiotherapy

Some of the benefits of physiotherapy can include: increased muscle and joint movement, increased cardiovascular performance, elimination or significant reduction in pain, avoidance of surgeries - what can be treated with physiotherapy will most likely be recommended over surgical procedures.

Physiotherapy can also reduce a dependency upon medicines, as they can become a substitute for certain pain medications or anti-inflammatory drugs. Physiotherapy can also help manage diabetic and heart-related conditions, as well as mitigate the physical effects of pregnancy on the body by making the pregnancy process easier. Physiotherapy can also improve a patient's mental health.

Physiotherapy For Children

Physiotherapy is great for kids who routinely play sports, or kids who have a myriad of condition impacting their physical function, and kids who might have issues with bone or muscle growth, or some other type of physio-neurological disorder. Physiotherapists can help children grow properly by helping strengthen and tone their muscles as they age, rather than playing catch-up when they’re a teenager or adult.
