Exercise Physiology vs Physiotherapy: Which Do I Need?

By Aaron Babb · Draft

Physiotherapists diagnose and treat injuries and pain — they are especially valuable in the acute, hands-on phase soon after something goes wrong. Accredited exercise physiologists (AEPs) use exercise as medicine to manage chronic conditions and build long-term strength and function. They are complementary professions, and many people benefit from seeing both, often in sequence: a physio to settle the problem, then an exercise physiologist to build lasting resilience.

What does a physiotherapist do?

A physiotherapist is a university-trained clinician who assesses, diagnoses and treats injuries and movement problems. Their toolkit includes hands-on manual therapy, joint and soft-tissue techniques, dry needling, and targeted early rehabilitation exercises. Physios are trained to identify what is actually driving your pain and to guide you safely through the first, often most sensitive, stage of recovery.

What does an accredited exercise physiologist do?

An accredited exercise physiologist is a university-trained allied health professional who specialises in clinical exercise. Rather than hands-on treatment, an AEP designs and supervises structured exercise programs to manage chronic health conditions, improve fitness, and restore function. Their focus is on the longer game — helping you move confidently, get stronger, and stay well over months and years, not just days.

When to see a physiotherapist

A physiotherapist is usually the right first call when:

  • You have a recent or acute injury, such as a sprain, strain or sports injury.
  • You are in significant pain and need it settled and explained.
  • You need a clear diagnosis before knowing how to proceed.
  • You would benefit from hands-on treatment to reduce pain and restore movement.
  • You are in the early stages of rehabilitation after surgery.

When an exercise physiologist is ideal

An exercise physiologist is often the better fit when your needs are ongoing rather than acute:

  • You are managing a chronic condition — such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, arthritis or persistent (chronic) pain.
  • You want long-term conditioning to build strength, mobility and cardiovascular fitness.
  • You need a structured, progressive exercise program you can sustain.
  • You are working towards capacity-building goals under the NDIS.

How they overlap and work together at Aevum

The two professions are not rivals — they hand off to one another. A common pathway at Aevum looks like this: a physiotherapist settles the injury, reduces your pain and restores basic movement, then an exercise physiologist takes over to rebuild strength, capacity and confidence so the problem is less likely to return. Working the two together means you are supported from the acute moment right through to lasting, independent function.

A note on our approach

This active-rehabilitation philosophy is not accidental. Our founder, Aaron Babb, trained first as an exercise physiologist before qualifying as a physiotherapist. That background shapes how Aevum works — we value hands-on treatment, but we believe the real, lasting gains come from getting you moving and building genuine strength and resilience over time.

Not sure which you need?

If you are unsure whether a physiotherapist or an exercise physiologist is the right starting point, you do not have to work it out on your own. Contact us and we will point you to the right clinician for where you are in your recovery.
