NDIS physiotherapy is funded under the Capacity Building — Improved Daily Living budget in your plan, and how you book and pay for it depends on whether your plan is self-managed, plan-managed or agency-managed (NDIA-managed). Aevum Health is a registered NDIS provider serving the Sutherland Shire, with clinics at Kirrawee and Helensburgh, plus home and community visits. This article explains where physiotherapy sits in an NDIS plan and what to expect when you get started.
Who is eligible, and where physio sits in a plan
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) supports Australians with a permanent and significant disability. Physiotherapy is usually funded as a "therapeutic support" within the Capacity Building — Improved Daily Living category. Unlike the Core Supports budget, Capacity Building funds are allocated against goals in your plan — for example, improving mobility, building strength, maintaining independence at home, or participating more fully at school or work.
Because these funds are tied to your goals rather than a fixed number of sessions, the amount of physiotherapy you can access depends on what was allocated at your planning meeting. If you are unsure what your plan includes, your plan manager, support coordinator or local area coordinator can help you read it.
The three plan management types
How you book physiotherapy — and which providers you can see — depends on how your plan is managed:
- Self-managed — you receive and pay invoices yourself, then claim back through the NDIS portal. You have the most flexibility and can see registered or non-registered providers.
- Plan-managed — a plan manager handles invoices and payments on your behalf. You can still choose most providers, and there is no cost to you for the plan management itself.
- Agency-managed (NDIA-managed) — the NDIA pays providers directly, but you must use NDIS-registered providers. As a registered provider, Aevum Health can support participants under any of these three arrangements.
What NDIS physiotherapy looks like
Physiotherapy through the NDIS is designed around your goals and daily life, not just a single injury. Sessions can take place in our clinic at Kirrawee, in your home, or at school or another community setting, depending on what works best for you.
A typical journey begins with an assessment, where your physiotherapist reviews your movement, strength, balance and function, then works with you to set clear, meaningful goals. From there, support may include mobility and gait work, strength and conditioning, falls prevention, help with transfers and daily tasks, and recommendations for equipment or assistive technology such as walking aids or supportive seating. Where relevant, your physiotherapist can also contribute reports to support future plan reviews.
Working alongside OT and exercise physiology
Many NDIS participants benefit from more than one type of allied health support. At Aevum, physiotherapy often works hand in hand with occupational therapy, which focuses on daily living tasks and the home environment, and exercise physiology, which supports longer-term exercise and chronic condition management. For participants living with a neurological condition, our neurological rehabilitation team can also be involved. This multidisciplinary approach helps make sure everyone is working towards the same goals in your plan.
Getting started in the Shire
Starting is straightforward. We offer a free discovery session so you can meet the team, ask questions and check that we are the right fit before committing. It helps to bring a copy of your NDIS plan (or your plan manager's details) and a few notes on the goals that matter most to you. From there we can confirm how your plan is managed and set up ongoing sessions at whichever of our Kirrawee or Helensburgh clinics is most convenient, or arrange home visits.
You can learn more on our NDIS physiotherapy page.
A note on NDIS rules
This article is general information only and is not individual advice. NDIS rules, budgets and funding categories change from time to time, and every participant's plan is different. For guidance specific to your situation, please speak with your plan manager, support coordinator, or contact our team — we are always happy to help you understand how physiotherapy might fit within your plan and to book a discovery session.
